FROCK STARS: INSIDE AUSTRALIAN FASHION WEEK

To celebrate the 15th year of Rosemount Australian Fashion Week, the Powerhouse Museum takes you behind the scenes to show you the history, highlights, controversies and achievements of the Australian fashion industry.

Complete with catwalk, music, lights, parade footage and outfits, visitors will also get a taste of the front row glitz and glamour.

The exhibition runs from 22 April - 29 August 2010

17TH BIENNALE OF SYDNEY

The Biennale of Sydney is Australia's largest and most exciting contemporary visual arts event. The fourth oldest biennale in the world, the Biennale of Sydney continues to be recognised for showcasing the freshest and most provocative contemporary art from Australia and around the world.

The biennial exhibition is held in Sydney's leading art venues and public sites, and is renowned for showcasing the freshest and most innovative contemporary art from Australia and around the world.

During the exhibition, a program of public tours, international guest lectures, artist talks, film screenings and special events are held across the city – and most events are free.

PENNY & TONY COLEING COLLECTIONS

Murrundi presents an assortment of Aboriginal artwork from the collections of Penny and Tony Coleing, including the work of Robert Campbell Junior (1944-1993), the first Aboriginal artist finalist in the Archibald Prize.

Campbell Junior’s work serves as eye-catching and humorous social commentary. His canvases are vividly coloured in which his simple figures play out scenes of small town racism.

The exhibition runs from 4 June- 31 August

AUSTRALIAN DESIGN AWARDS EXHIBITION

As part of Sydney Design 2010, the Powerhouse Museum is showcasing a selection of the top designs from the 2010 Australian International Design Awards.

The collection includes a device that stores hearts in transit before surgery, a gaming headset that reads brain signals and facial expressions and a fire reconnaissance vehicle for bushfires.

The exhibition runs from 3 July 2010 – June 2011

SINGAPORE DESIGNER’S PUBLIC LECTURES

This series of 5 presentations showcases the works of leading Singapore designers. These lectures offer a dialogue between students, design educators, practitioners and designers while promoting public awareness of good local designs and new design solutions arising from changes in lifestyles.

JEWELLERY EXHIBITIONS AT MANLY ART GALLERY & MUSEUM

Three simultaneous exhibitions at the Manly Art Gallery and Museum are showcasing contemporary jewellery making and design by leading artists from Australia and New Zealand.

The three exhibitions are: Excessory: Contemporary Australian Jewellery, the biennial Contemporary Wearables/ Commemorative Wearables and the tenth anniversary exhibition of the Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize - Australia’s only national prize for sculpture of smaller dimensions.

SYDNEY DESIGN 2010

This year’s contemporary design festival in Sydney – with the theme ‘tell us a story’ – is holding more than 70 events and activities across 25 different locations.

From kids activities to knitting workshops, designer markets, talks and exhibitions, the ‘tell us a story’ theme opens up a world behind design ideas, objects and processes, allowing the public to connect with design on a more personal level.

CREATING THE LOOK: BENINI AND FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION

As part of Sydney Design 2010, the Powerhouse Museum brings you an exhibition showcasing the work of Bruno Benini - one of Australia’s leading 20th century fashion photographers.

The exhibition explores Benini’s successful parternship with stylist Hazel Benini and the behind-the-scenes styling, crafting and designing responsible for the memorable and striking images he produced between the 1950s and 90s.

The exhibition runs from 31 July - April 2011

VALENTINO, RETROSPECTIVE – PAST/PRESENT/FUTURE

This exhibition of 100 garments will trace Valentino Garavani’s career from the 1959 opening of his fashion house in Rome to the present. The exhibition has been designed and realised by Les Arts Décoratifs, Paris, with the assistance of the Valentino fashion house. Valentino has dressed generations of successful and glamorous women, and this exhibition includes dresses worn by celebrities including Jackie Onassis and Julia Roberts. The exhibition has been organised in Australia by the Queensland Art Gallery and Art Exhibitions Australia, continuing a partnership that has presented numerous exhibitions over the years. ‘Valentino, Retrospective — Past/Present/Future’ will be complemented by a special exhibition for children, featuring work drawn from the Gallery’s own Collection, exploring the relationship between fashion and art. GoMA will be the only venue in Australia to host this exhibition.


FASHION IN ACTION - SYDNEY DESIGN 2010

Over two days as part of Sydney Design, the exhibition Fashion in Action showcases the differences between carefully constructed studio-based images and the ever-growing trend of street photography, popularised by blogging.

One of the main events over this weekend is a live, all-day shoot to show the creative production behind fashion photography - from set design and styling to photography and digital darkroom techniques.

Guests will have the chance to participate...by being photographed on set!

MELANIE FITZMAURICE'S 'THE EXPLORER'

Melanie Fitzmaurice, a Melbourne-based artist introduces her latest artworks, a series of sculptures of modified explorers’ equipment.

Informed by her latest travels to Hospitalfield House in the coastal town of Arbroath, Scotland, Fitzmaurice reinvents these objects once used for exploring, climbing or travelling, rendering them completely dysfunctional and surreal.

The exhibition runs from 10 - 28 August
