Living in the Environment Issue

Issue 62 is the first issue of the year and always a great time to put our best foot forward. With Adam Goodrum, the loveliest man in design, as Guest Editor, we draw on his insights as a furniture designer, artist and educator to look at the makers shaping our design world. Sustainability has never been more important, and increasingly this is a consideration from the start with projects designed to address their immediate environment as well as the longevity of the planet. From the coldest winters to the most tropical of summers, addressing how we live in the environment is crucial to creating the perfect home.

Foveaux Restaurant transforms into Foveaux St Dining

Australia

Surry Hill’s Foveaux Restaurant has been transformed into a casual dining space under the new name Foveaux St Dining, combining relaxed bites with a warm and welcoming feel.

Sydney-based design studio, loopcreative, was set with the task of transforming Foveaux Restaurant, and have embraced the new vision and direction of chef and owner, Darrell Felstead. Patrons now enter the 38-seat restaurant through a sculptural wine cellar constructed from reinforced steel leading up to the dining space. A darker pallet has injected the space with a sense of intimacy, supported by low lighting placed deliberately over the tables. Table surfaces are now bare, and the restaurant’s seating has been designed to allow for inclusivity and meal sharing.

The bar downstairs from Foveaux St Dining, formerly The Red Door, has also been given a makeover and name change. Known as Deli Wine Bar, it has been transformed into a space that reflects its subterranean nature and rawness of its surrounds. The bar’s old decorative sofas and poufs have made way for form ply seats, sound lab booths and a cyclone fence mesh woven ceiling, and bankers’ lamps have been placed on tables to cast a dim light throughout the space. Entrance to the Deli Wine Bar is now via the rear Sophia Lane through fire exit safety stairs, underneath a flashing neon sign inviting people inside.
