There is something special about pieces of furniture that are handed down from one generation to the next, but it is something absolutely magical to be handed down the production of a whole range of a Danish design master.
This is exactly what Great Dane Furniture’s Anton Assaad has achieved – bringing the works of legendary designer Arne Vodder back to life nearly 60 years after their conception.
“I feel privileged to have worked with Arne Vodder and to have listened to his stories and his inspiration,” says the Great Dane Furniture founder.
Assaad spent time with Vodder, before his passing in December 2009, learning directly from the master about his techniques, approach to design and, perhaps most importantly, the production of his pieces. This contact with the designer has helped Great Dane to retain the integrity of these beautiful mid-century pieces.
“It is wonderful to see my designs back in production after all these years,” Vodder said when working on the project with Great Dane.
As Assaad explains, Vodder’s furniture, with its clean contemporary lines, sits as comfortably in the homes and offices of today as it originally did in the ‘50s and ‘60s – with pieces in the new range like the iconic #26 sideboard, combining organic shapes, timber, metal and coloured door panels.
“I am proud and thrilled that Great Dane Furniture has helped to bring [Vodder’s] extraordinary range back into production,” Assaad says. “I am also delighted that we can produce the range in Denmark, a country that has given me so much both professionally and personally.”
The Arne Vodder Range is now available across Great Dane’s showrooms in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Great Dane are hopeful that they will be able to add to this already successful collection in the future.
