Living in the Environment Issue

Issue 62 is the first issue of the year and always a great time to put our best foot forward. With Adam Goodrum, the loveliest man in design, as Guest Editor, we draw on his insights as a furniture designer, artist and educator to look at the makers shaping our design world. Sustainability has never been more important, and increasingly this is a consideration from the start with projects designed to address their immediate environment as well as the longevity of the planet. From the coldest winters to the most tropical of summers, addressing how we live in the environment is crucial to creating the perfect home.

BeoVision 7-55

Bang & Olufsen aims to create ‘design classics’ in the throw-away world of technology.

As the heart of the home moves away from the traditional open fire and modest lounge and towards multipurpose living areas encompassing the kitchen, lounge and dining it seems that technology such as televisions and computers gain more and more attention.

For around 85 years Danish electronics company Bang & Olufsen have been focussing on products that communicate, from the Bakelite radios of the 1930s to everything from speakers to sound systems and televisions.

The company produces just a handful of products each year and believes strongly in making design classics, such as the award-winning BeoLab 5000 series.

However, in 2010 it will be more than a ‘slide rule’ aesthetic that will impress technology hungry Design Hunters™. The latest television from B&O, the BeoVision 7-55 is for people who take their television (and design) seriously.

Created as more of a confident centrepiece than a wallflower, the 7-55 offers a clearer picture with its double frame-rate technology and is also one of only a few televisions on the market with an integrated Blu-Ray player.

The 7-55 can be wall mounted, but is made for floor placement with motorised solutions to control tilt and angle depending on viewing position, all at the touch of a remote control button.

The television comes in a range of colours from natural aluminium to black, dark grey, red, and blue. “The choice of materials and colours, as well as the craftsman’s constant attention to detail, make this TV much more than the sum of its parts,” says Ole Moltsen, B&O Senior Product Manager.

As with many B&O products, the price tag for the 7-55 – $33,500 – certainly takes it beyond the reach of many of us, however, the depth of design, and attention to detail from B&O ensures their products are more than passing fancy.
