Five ways to transform your space

From new curtains to updated floor coverings, Habitus has rounded up their go-to tricks to changing an interior space, without the need for sledgehammers or a bank loan.

We’ve all been there before: sitting in our homes or apartments, looking at the same interior we’ve been looking at for months or years, and feeling that overwhelming urge for change. Whether a space just needs a quick refresh or some more serious interventions, there are some quick and easy steps that can help make a room feel bigger, brighter, and more visually interesting, without needing to take out a sledgehammer or spend a small fortune on a remodel.

Thanks to Carpet Court, we’ve rounded up our top five tips for transforming any interior space, where simple adjustments can create the feel of an entirely new room.

1. Brighten up a room with sheer curtains

Natural light is the single most important tool for any architect or interior designer, and can immediately change the way a room feels and functions. Whether in your own home or a rental, switching out heavy, dated fabrics for sheer curtains can instantly drench a room in sunlight, and works as its own art feature, diffusing changing light patterns and bringing movement to a space as the lighter fabric moves with the breeze.

When it comes to selecting your sheer curtains, you can play with transparency and fabric depending on your preference and context. Carpet Court’s range of sheers allows you to compare and contrast different options in situ, while also being able to form part of a layered window dressing, sitting on top of their blinds or behind their heavier fabrics for greater control of privacy and light.

UV protection will also ensure your floors and furnishings are protected, so you can bask in natural light without discolouring or damaging your favourite pieces.

2. Add depth and materiality with traditional rugs

The right rug can make a room look bigger, brighter, softer, and immediately add a new aesthetic to a space. As the anchor for an entire room, the floor is really the secret to a successful design composition and rugs are a gateway to update or switch this anchor without needing to rip up floorboards or lay down new carpet.

Carpet Court is one of our favourite destinations to find an incredible rug. With a range of styles, shapes, colours and textures to choose from, their rug collection makes it easier than ever to find the perfect piece for any kind of space.

Our pick is the traditional range, which features selections from Turkey, India and Belgium to bring the work of ancient techniques and craftsmanship into the home. Persian, Oriental and modern styles and designs are all part of the range, letting you transform your space with delicately textured and intricately coloured designs that will help to elevate and heighten the pieces you choose to lay on top of it.

3. Inject personality with art and pieces on display

Once you’ve got a beautiful rug on the floor and have lit your space up with sheer curtains and natural light, you’ve created a canvas to let artworks sing. While investing in art can often seem inaccessible, the secret is really to just go for pieces you truly love, because this will create a space you enjoy being in.

When it comes to finding pieces, places like Studio Gallery, HAKE House of Art and Jardan can give you access to some of Australia’s best up-and-coming and established artists, while social media can connect you directly to burgeoning artists who can do commissions for a personalised touch.

It’s not all about bringing in the new though, dressing your space with art can also include thinking outside the square, so consider reframing existing work, getting creative with hanging rugs or fabrics (see Carpet Court’s rug range!), or even putting ceramics and vases on display for a sculptural element.

4. Create softness or add colour with new textiles

From luxe bed linens to new curtains, mixing up your textile selections can help add a new material palette or introduce new tones and hues into a space. When a room is feeling a little tired and in need of a refresh, changing out fabric covers on cushions, pillows, beds, windows, or even upholstery is a relatively inexpensive and environmentally friendly way to create the appearance of an entirely new space. Whether it’s a whole couch making a visit to the reupholsterer, or simply a new quilt cover thrown on the bed, the broad scale of textile options available can give you the freedom to brighten, lighten, or switch up your interior typology.

Head to In Bed for layered linens, Carpet Court for sheer curtains, and then look to tactile materials like corduroy or suede to add elements of texture to pockets of your home.

5. Look to fixtures and hardware for elevated finishing touches

One of our favourite ways to subtly elevate a space is to play with hardware and fixtures. The perfect solution for renters and owners alike, changing handles, pulls, door knobs, and even switches for options that align with your aesthetic can add personality, authenticity and an individual feel to your space. Older homes can lean into art deco pieces in a nod to their heritage, or funner, more unique hardware can be used as a reflection on the owner/occupier.

Retailers like Spiggy will be your go-to for architectural hardware, while Etsy and vintage markets and stores can have rare finds for a slice of history or a truly unique creation.

Whatever your space requires, Carpet Court can help with your transformation, creating beautiful and functional interiors with their range of carpets, flooring, rugs, and curtains. With all foundational elements of spatial design covered in their range, Carpet Court are the go-to for creating a home that looks, and feels like your dream space.
