Lights and glamour: Catherine Martin’s latest collections revealed in theatrical fashion

On a glamourous night that rocked the design world, Designer Rugs and Mokum revealed its latest collections from Catherine Martin – ‘Majorelle’ and ‘The Royal Menagerie’.

Met with a glamourous treat, over 200 guests from Australia’s design industry were at the unveiling of Oscar-winning star Catherine Martin’s first Axminster carpet collection, ‘Majorelle’. Also on show was her new textile collection, ‘The Royal Menagerie’. And the drinks were pouring, and the event was a delight, thanks to the special partnership between Designer Rugs, Mokum and Catherine Martin herself.

The event embodied the best of what creatives bring to the design world. The excitement was palpable from the wonderous sights of the performance art duo, The Huxleys, and an incredible video showcasing some movie magic, with behind-the-scenes images from Elvis.

But it was the eclectic collections on display that stole the night. Images of ‘Majorelle’ were reimagined into styled vignettes, much like the films Catherine Martin has more than influenced, including Romeo + Juliet, The Great Gatsby and Elvis.

The premium carpet designs of ‘Majorelle’ are a lovechild of Catherine Martin’s love for the tropical wonder, with influence aplenty of middle eastern design. And with decedent collection, ‘The Royal Menagerie’, Martin and long-time collaborators Mokum have translated fantastical botanical motifs, animal prints, and the glamour of rock’n’roll into textiles that lined the walls of the venue.

“Celebrating my love of mixing discordant textures and patterns into extravagantly contrasting but nevertheless visually enticing combinations, I seek, in this collection, to find a style where being baroque is elegant and modern,” says Catherine. “Marrying animal print and embellished tropical designs and an exuberantly luxurious palette, this is a collection that is meant to be both glamorous and playful.”

And the night was more than playful. It all came together in ‘Majorelle’ for Designer Rugs taking to heart Martin’s vision, and its promise to the customer is at the forefront with the collection’s customisable possibilities. And with Mokum, its photographs of the collection throughout the venue spoke volumes of the design’s intricate, patterned details.

“Creating unique designs for Axminster carpet is a natural progression for us as a luxury rug brand – the flexibility of design and colour, and the renowned high quality of this type of carpet production have made it a very successful venture,” as Yosi Tal, managing director of Designer Rugs, puts it.

Thanks to the shared vision between Designer Rugs and Mokum, it was a night to remember, and these collections will be anything but forgotten.
