Issue 62 is the first issue of the year and always a great time to put our best foot forward. With Adam Goodrum, the loveliest man in design, as Guest Editor, we draw on his insights as a furniture designer, artist and educator to look at the makers shaping our design world. Sustainability has never been more important, and increasingly this is a consideration from the start with projects designed to address their immediate environment as well as the longevity of the planet. From the coldest winters to the most tropical of summers, addressing how we live in the environment is crucial to creating the perfect home.

The importance of having just the right amount of light is key to create the perfect ambience. And there has been an explosion of clever, portable and affordable lamps from some of the best design brands in the world. So much so, we couldn’t decide which we prefer – the bulbous Obello Portable Lamp by Gubi with a soft glowing haze, or the Setago Table Lamp by &Tradition that gives a subtle nod to a retro past. Geometric and angular, the Svante watering can in brass (also available in copper), is a scandi delight. Designed by Broberg & Ridderstråle for Klong it turns the chore of watering plants into an activity to savour, from Great Dane.

Jewellery for the shelf

Almost too beautiful to use, the iconic series of Bash Vessels by Tom Dixon are formed from a single piece of brass shaped by hand. Crumpled, organic and original, each one is an expression of the hand that made it, from Living Edge.

Set the mood

Carved from a single piece of stone, Indian designer Rooshad Shroff has created unique candles that emit a warming woody scent. The stand-out is of course the angular stone the candles are poured into – a natural alabaster that lets out just the right amount of candlelight through its milky form. From Rooshad Shroff.

For the foodie

Defined by an organic, sculptural form – the Cairn grinder by Ferm Living in a rich FSC-Certified timber invites you to pick it up and use it. An object exuding a natural charm, it’s worthy of being front and centre on the dining table, from Marz Designs.

Art meets design

Blobby and organic in a series of sorbet hues, the Chubby candleholder and vase by Wang & Söderström are miniature pieces of sculptural art – albeit with a function. Printed three-dimensionally and moulded in ceramic, they bring any corner of the home to life, from HAY online and in-store.

A case for something playful
