Living in the Environment Issue

Issue 62 is the first issue of the year and always a great time to put our best foot forward. With Adam Goodrum, the loveliest man in design, as Guest Editor, we draw on his insights as a furniture designer, artist and educator to look at the makers shaping our design world. Sustainability has never been more important, and increasingly this is a consideration from the start with projects designed to address their immediate environment as well as the longevity of the planet. From the coldest winters to the most tropical of summers, addressing how we live in the environment is crucial to creating the perfect home.

Creativity and charm at Indonesia’s Kota Tua Creative Festival

Rotterdam based studio Collective Paper Aesthetics has designed a new modular system for the Kota Tua Creative Festival 2015 in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The design is a means of translating traditional batik patterns and geometric designs borrowed from Islamic history together in a fold and unfold festivity centre in Kota Tua.

Together with local alternative education community Lingkaran and local Indonesian designer designer Angger Diri Wiranata from Surabaya, initiative founder Noa Haim gave a two-day participatory workshop in the Unesco Heritage neighbourhood of Kota Tua / Oud Batavia.

Visitors strolling into the historic site during the weekend were excited to discover the unique program offering creative activity for children and adults at the Historia Café building. Participants in the workshop were experiencing free form design under a set of pre-defined rules. It was the first activity for collective paper aesthetics in Indonesia and South East Asia. “The warm response to the studio work and the enthusiasm of the collaborators and participants made me realise by non-rational means that creativity is a common global language,” explains Noa Haim.

At the end of the festival, the centre piece made from 168 identical pieces ‘landed’ in the foyer at the Netherlands embassy in Jakarta where it will be on display for the near future.

The project was organised by SHAU architects and financed by Creative Industries Fund.
