Living in the Environment Issue

Issue 62 is the first issue of the year and always a great time to put our best foot forward. With Adam Goodrum, the loveliest man in design, as Guest Editor, we draw on his insights as a furniture designer, artist and educator to look at the makers shaping our design world. Sustainability has never been more important, and increasingly this is a consideration from the start with projects designed to address their immediate environment as well as the longevity of the planet. From the coldest winters to the most tropical of summers, addressing how we live in the environment is crucial to creating the perfect home.

iPod Docking stations

We look at a range of innovative and stylish iPod docking stations and ask you your favourites.

With the unquenchable thirst for sound systems compatible with iPods in the market, we thought we should look at four docking stations that stand out from the crowd…

Zikmu Parrot by Starck

Designer extraordinaire Philippe Starck lends his hand to Zikmu with the ‘Parrot by Starck’, a set of wireless speakers with iPod docking capabilities.

Self-standing, the eye is drawn from the rectangular speaker to the flared, circular base, carefully integrating the woofer and bass.

Available in green, white, silver and black, users of the speakers will be delighted by its unobtrusive stance and quality sound.

Speakal iBoo

Looking ever-so-cute is the Speakal iBoo. Its bulbous shape and big eyes are sure to draw a smile to any user.

But its styling hides some smart details; its sub woofer is cleverly hidden under the body, making the iBoo dance when it’s playing. The eyes also disguise the speakers and its mouth is actually the remote control receiver.

Available in red, blue and white, it makes for great company in the office, backyard barbeque or at home.

Bowers and Wilkins Zeppelin Mini

Borrowing its name from its bigger brother and a certain airship, the Zeppelin Mini has a restrained and modern look.

The focus of the Zeppelin Mini’s design is on the mounting device. The product’s silver, scalloped top draws attention away from the dark fabric-covered body, emphasising the mounting arm.

The rotating arm sits hidden behind the music player, providing an easy angle to use the iPhone’s cover flow function and watch movies.

Vers 1.5R

The Vers 1.5R sound system is inspired by classic stereo systems with timber veneer over a pine and eucalyptus MDF cabinet.

With a strong rectangular profile, the soft speaker cover diffuses the sharp-edged timber cabinet, encouraging the user to want to use the product and know it is a quality system.

The silver details of the controls highlight the grains of the timber.

Available in Bamboo, Dark Walnut and Natural Walnut, the product is stylish and traditional.
