Living in the Environment Issue

Issue 62 is the first issue of the year and always a great time to put our best foot forward. With Adam Goodrum, the loveliest man in design, as Guest Editor, we draw on his insights as a furniture designer, artist and educator to look at the makers shaping our design world. Sustainability has never been more important, and increasingly this is a consideration from the start with projects designed to address their immediate environment as well as the longevity of the planet. From the coldest winters to the most tropical of summers, addressing how we live in the environment is crucial to creating the perfect home.

‘Watch’ out for Alessi’s latest collection

From bottle openers disguised as colourful parrots, to kitchen paper holders dressed up as carrots, Alessi has made it their mission to bring mundane everyday objects to life.

This time round it’s watches. Collaborating with a troop of architects, industrial designers and artists, Alessi presents their signature quirky flair in the form of timepieces – putting the fun back into functionality.

If you’re the flamboyant type, you’ll have the ‘time’ of your life with the Luna range by Alessandro Mendini. Bold, bright slabs of colour dominate, from large white spots set on a red background to Mondrian-style blocks of black and yellow.

Karim Rashid has put his usual playful (and brutally colourful) touch on the, 100% Rashid, ‘Kaj’ collection.

If you’re not looking for a Show-pony kind of watch, the ‘out_time’ collection by architect/designer Andrea Branzi has the funky but modernist appeal of Alessi without an overdose of kitsch.

With digital watches making a big comeback, Alessi’s answer to the latest trend is the daytimer collection, which is available in block colours of either black, red, green, purple or white, all with a black dial – its asymmetry making it more of a wearable mini cubist sculpture than a watch.

With these new playful and upbeat designs, time really is on your side!
