Vintage Modern Issue

The breadth and scope of Habitus has always been extraordinary. With how we live at heart of every issue, we have stepped it up with Guest Editor David Flack of Flack Studio shaking the ‘how’ and looking at new ways to make a house a home. With Vintage Modern as the issues theme, we look at the way iconic design has stayed with us, how daring pieces from the past can add the wow factor and how architecture and good design defy the pigeon hole of their era.

Developer Hengyi partnered with Plus Architecture to remodel the Pacifica Penthouses into four distinct residences imbued with the lyricism inherent in their oeuvre.

The Pacifica Penthouses – which sit atop Auckland’s latest skyscraper – have been reconfigured at the deft hands of Plus Architecture. Developer Hengyi called on Plus Architecture to imbue what was originally conceived as one super-sized residence across floors 53 and 54 into four distinct residences with the lyricism perpetually found in their produced oeuvre.

Overseeing the detailed interior configuration and design of dual penthouses, the project is the illustrious product of an international collaboration between the Auckland and Melbourne teams at Plus Architecture. “Our work on the tower and specifically on the penthouses showcases the firm’s commitment to delivering site-sensitive, innovative designs that have the client’s brief at their heart. Successfully navigating the challenges of retrofitting an existing structure and creating spaces that balance minimalism with warmth, we are delighted to deliver world-class residences, befitting of a world-class city,” shares Hamish Davies, Director of Plus Architecture, on the practice’s seven-year tenure on the development since its inception.

The design takes wabi-sabi as a guiding principle, celebrating the beauty in imperfection by using natural materials to improve the connection to the surrounding environment. The extensive use of timber cladding has been explored, including juxtaposing horizontal and vertical wood grain. Meanwhile, a render finish has been applied throughout and complemented by shadowline skirting, all while discreet custom joinery obscures practical amenities. Overall, the fluid layout allows residents to move seamlessly between zones.

Apartment 5402, spanning 355 square metres, comprises four large bedrooms – two notably with en-suite – a powder room, laundry, butler’s pantry, a cocktail bar and study. In the living room, a linear fireplace, carved into the wall features internal facets clad in travertine, which wrap around the wall, extending into the threshold of the main entrance. One level below, in distinctive contrast to the brightness of Apartment 5402, is the darker-toned Apartment 5303, which harnesses clever spatial planning to maximise a smaller footprint. Floor-to-ceiling external glazing offers residents expansive views of the iconic metropolitan landscape.

“The layout of the penthouse apartments is designed to delineate between the social and more private areas. Generous proportions enable the spaces to flow and intertwine with one another, creating seamless transitions. Prioritising simplicity and practicality, the apartments are imbued with a sense of calm and clarity, allowing residents to unwind and recharge,” explains Ivona Golubovic, lead interior designer, Plus Architecture, regarding the design philosophy behind the penthouses.

It’s worth mentioning the extensive consideration given to communal areas too. Outside of the penthouses, patrons will find world-class amenities sequestered throughout the structure. Accessible facilities include a heated swimming pool, sauna, steam room and spa, a state-of-the-art gymnasium, library, private cinema and barbecue terrace, alongside a 24-hour concierge service and valet car parking. Nothing says ‘luxury’ quite like the feeling of living within a hotel.
