Vintage Modern Issue

The breadth and scope of Habitus has always been extraordinary. With how we live at heart of every issue, we have stepped it up with Guest Editor David Flack of Flack Studio shaking the ‘how’ and looking at new ways to make a house a home. With Vintage Modern as the issues theme, we look at the way iconic design has stayed with us, how daring pieces from the past can add the wow factor and how architecture and good design defy the pigeon hole of their era.

The new Ritz-Carlton is setting a new benchmark for luxury accommodation, while still being distinctly Melburnian.

As a city, Melbourne is famed for its art and culture scene, its hidden alleyways, and – of course – its coffee and gastronomic offerings. The new Ritz-Carlton, part of Marriott Bonvoy’s portfolio of 30 exceptional hotel brands, captures all this and more in their Melbournian outpost; a sky-high retreat that distils the best of Melbourne and Australia into a unique luxury destination.

Rising 80 stories above the city, The Ritz-Carlton Melbourne is an escape in the clouds, overlooking the bustling metropolis as well as Port Phillip Bay, Victoria Harbour, and the Dandenong Ranges which all stretch out along the horizon. More than just your standard hotel, this is a space firmly rooted in its context, a built celebration of Australia’s ancient stories and vibrant cultures that come to life in situ.

Australian by design
A combined creative team of architects Cottee Parker and interior studio BAR have brought the hotel to life, with every detail from the lobby walls to the plush guest rooms all carefully considered. The result is a hotel that feels utterly luxurious but inherently “Australian”, with beautifully curated artworks, soundtracks, and design palettes combining to create an immersive cultural experience that capture the nation’s Indigenous heritage, Victorian-era gold rush, European influences, and Melbourne’s fabled laneway life.

An unrivalled guest experience
The guest experience begins with check-in at the spectacular Sky Lobby Reception on Level 80. With a double-vaulted ceiling and windows offering panoramic views of the city and its surroundings, the Sky Lobby is the start of a transportive escape, where every sense is treated to a new standard of luxury.

From the Sky Lobby, guests will check-in to one of 257 guestrooms. A masterclass in understated elegance, each room features a foundation of signature dark wood and simple natural stone, materials elevated by the addition of hand-made glass panels, custom light fixtures, and touches of gold. With reference points spanning the Australian bush and its golden sunrises, to contemporary European influences with luxe materiality and finishes, each room is an ode to Melbourne as an international city.

The Ritz-Carlton Suite, one of the city’s largest, spans 257 sqm, the full length of the building. Separate living and dining rooms, a walk-through wardrobe, in-room sauna, and private pantry are all part of the impressive suite, giving guests the full hotel experience without the need to leave the privacy of their own space.

Evocative amenities
If the guest rooms reflect the Australian landscape, then the amenities are more distinctly Melbournian. Three culinary venues make up the in-house eateries, with a diverse array of epicurean delights on offer.

The hotel’s signature one-hat restaurant Atria features hyper-seasonal, innovative, inspiring dishes by Executive Chef Michael Greenlaw, while cocktail bar Cameo is a luxurious showcase for exceptional spirits, rare vintages, and the art of mixology. Guests can wine and dine before expansive city views, drinking in the city skyline with creative and progressive menu concepts at home in Melbourne’s iconic hospitality scene.

Alternatively, the Ritz-Carlton Lobby Lounge offers the perfect setting for coffee, casual luncheons, relaxed dinners, and receptions, while also providing a sumptuous high tea experience complete with personalised menus and customised tea blends.

For guests looking to unwind, The Ritz-Carlton Spa features six serene treatment rooms, while a holistic wellness space includes a carefully curated fitness centre, peaceful yoga studio, sauna, steam-room, and a stunning infinity pool that floats into the horizon.

An events destination
Not just an urban oasis, the hotel will also be home to some of the city’s best events, with a separate private events floor on Level 1 and 2 offering over 2,500 square metres of exceptional, customisable spaces. From intimate gatherings, to expansive corporate functions, The Ritz-Carlton has the space and amenities to support world-class events, including in The Ritz-Carlton Grand Ballroom with its stunning floor-to-ceiling feature-window inspired by Melbourne’s National Gallery of Victoria.

A stay in Melbourne’s newest leading luxury hotel will be one to remember. Carefully designed in homage to its location, The Ritz-Carlton Melbourne is distinct in aesthetic and in experience, with amenities, accommodations, and guest services all combining to create an unparalleled hospitality escape in the heart of one of Australia’s most iconic cities.
