Living in the Environment Issue

Issue 62 is the first issue of the year and always a great time to put our best foot forward. With Adam Goodrum, the loveliest man in design, as Guest Editor, we draw on his insights as a furniture designer, artist and educator to look at the makers shaping our design world. Sustainability has never been more important, and increasingly this is a consideration from the start with projects designed to address their immediate environment as well as the longevity of the planet. From the coldest winters to the most tropical of summers, addressing how we live in the environment is crucial to creating the perfect home.

Habitus Deputy Editor, Nicky Lobo, wishes ‘infinity’ pool meant you can stay forever.

It’s one thing to have an infinity edge pool at your resort. It’s quite another to have your own personal infinity edge pool at your villa on the southern cliff tops overlooking Kata Beach in Phuket.

As far as the design goes, the aim, described by local architect Charupan Wiriyawiwatt, was to create “a luxury feel, but a little bit unplanned, a little organic… Like a village”. This is achieved through a series of steeply winding driveways and pathways, which are a challenge to traverse on foot, but navigated dexterously by staff in golf buggies.

With “contours sloping one way and then the other way to the rear,” as Wiriyawiwatt describes, the advantage of the clifftop site is obvious – each of the 48 villas offers fantastic views. And inside, a spacious layout with high ceilings, glass doors and an operable wall is complemented by natural finishes, such as timber in the bathroom and custom furniture in recycled materials.

Positioned for maximum seclusion, the villas are aimed at couples, with each detail – from flowers strewn on the king-sized bed to the towel origami swans with intertwining necks – perfect for honeymooners. While the grounds are extremely private and for the exclusive use of guests of The Shore, they also have access to facilities at the adjacent associated Katathani Phuket Beach Resort.

To top off the experience, a ‘Stay As You Wish’ form allows you to select what pillow you’d like, your choice of in-room breakfast, bath salt aroma, board game etc. And the ‘Shore, absolutely!’ pledge delivers custom service to all guests.

I shore hope I go back there soon…
